Let's dance, my friend!
The young boy
looked ahead. The scenery was stunning, as if someone had carefully painted
every detail of it , and was showing it off. The sky was orange, and everything
was quiet and peaceful. The cold evening breeze was gently moving his hair,
while bringing to his nose the lovely scent of the quiet girl sitting next to
him.
He quietly sighed. He had seen this same sunset every
day for the past five years, and he eventually grew bored of it, despite its apparent
beauty. His cousin however, who was discovering this spot on the rooftop for
the first time, seemed amazed. He didn’t want to ruin her moment.
He slowly took a misshaped cigarette from his front pocket,
and awkwardly tried to light it, while the cold October wind was determined to disappoint
his vain efforts.
The young boy was exhausted, both physically and
mentally. He felt that each day he worked at the small local factory was slowly
crushing his soul. Everyday, as he came back to his small apartment, he felt
horribly numb, tired, and empty.
He finally managed to get the lighter to work. As he
guiltily burned through the cheap cigarette, he could feel the eyes of the
quiet girl fixated on him.
- “You could live longer if you quit that, she whispered.
Before he could register it, he bitterly responded:
-Oh, I am a lonely 24 years old dude. I don’t mind not becoming a 60 years old
lonely dude, you know.
- Sorry about the smell, he added after a few seconds
of awkward silence.
- Why are you so sad all the time? The quiet girl
finally asked, with the hint of a smile on her lips.
- I have no idea. He shrugged.
Another pause. Then he added, laughing nervously:
-I don’t know. Everything is just so meaningless.”
He looked ahead, suddenly feeling very sad. He never
understood how everyone around him had the courage to get out of bed in the morning,
let alone cheerfully carry on with their respective days. To him, every single
day was a huge struggle.
Suddenly, he felt the warm hand of the quiet girl on
his, inviting him to get up and join her. He looked at her: There was a strange,
beautiful look on her brown eyes, and a wide genuine smile that was strangely
brightening her whole face with a light he had never seen on her before. As he slowly
got up, she said:
- “Let’s dance then, my friend! Let’s dance to the
meaninglessness of it all!”
The young boy continued to simply stare at her,
stunned by the beautiful look on her face, as she closed her eyes, and
gracefully moved her body, laughing loudly.
That night, on top of the lonely and empty streets of October,
on a little spot on a small rooftop, a young boy was dancing his soul out,
laughing like a maniac, without really knowing why he was laughing. He felt
like that huge weight, that was constantly on his chest, did not seem that heavy
after all.
